Akion saaren Akionlahden puoleiset rannat ovat luonnonsuojelualuetta. Akionlahdella pesii paljon lintuja ja lahti on tärkeä muuttolintujen levähdysalue.
Oulunsalo on kohonnut merestä. Ensimmäiset matalat karikot Oulunsalon kohdalla paljastuivat noin 2000 vuotta sitten. Merestä kohonnut saari kasvoi kiinni matereeseen 1800-luvulla. Maankohoaminen näkyy selvimmin Akionlahdella. Leväyskari, Nuppa ja Akio kasvavat kiinni toisiinsa ja mantereeseen. Akionlahti pienenee ja yhteys mereen on nykyään auki enää kahden ruopatun kanavan kautta.

In Akio the beaches on the side of Akionlahti are a nature reserve. A lot of birds nest in Akionlahti and the bay is an important resting area for the migrating birds.
Oulunsalo has risen from the sea. The first shallow shoals reaveald about 2000 years ago. The island grew to the mainland in 1800s. Uplift of the land is most evident in Akionlahti. Leväyskari, Nuoppa and Akio are growing to each other and to the mainland. Akionlahti is getting smaller and the connection to the sea is now open only through two dredged channels.
