Geocache Description:

Cache is located at the base of a famous rock arch along the bottom section of a trail leading to the Koko Crater Rim.

Park at Halona blowhole lookout parking lot. As with most places known to be frequented by tourists in Hawaii, please do not leave valuables in your car. From the parking lot, walk out onto the highway and go left to find the trailhead. You may choose to walk on the inside of the guardrail as the road is very narrow. As you walk up the road, on your left is "From Here to Eternity Beach" where the famous steamy love scene in the 50's movie was filmed.

About a 1/4 of a mile from the blowhole, you will find a Japanese fishing shrine with a carving of a Japanese guardian god that was said to preside over dangerous waterways. Originally, there was a stone statue installed by a Japanese fishing club, but during WWII it was demolished, and this carving took its place. Just past this shrine is Altar to a Rock God (GCWE52) if you are interested in finding another cache in the area.

Across from the shrine you will see a guardrail on the opposite (mauka) side of the street. From here, take a moment to study the two possible ridge routes you can take to find the cache. The trailheads are located on each end of the guardrail. We recommend taking the left-hand side to go up to the cache (as it has better ocean views) and the right one to come down as it gives you several different vantage points in which to view the rock arch.

Each trail has some loose rocks and you will need to use your eyes and common sense to find the best route to the top of the ridge. Once on the top of the ridge, the trail will lead you right to the rock arch and the cache in about 20 minutes. Note that the street crossing can be dangerous as there are two blind corners in each direction. We do not recommend this hike for young children or inexperienced hikers.

For additional information on this hike, see "The Hikers Guide to Oahu, Revised Edition" by Stuart M. Ball, Jr. or if you would like to see photos of the entire climb over the rock bridge to the summit you can go here: Koko Crater New Years Climb

It should be noted that all of these photos found in the above link are in a very close sequence until towards the end where they show the tunnel entrance to the shoreline right after the rail tracks. This tunnel is about 1.5 miles away from the tracks, so don't go poking around in the Kiawe looking for it! It can be found by looking up Secret Menehune Fishing Spot (GCMFAC). This cache is very close to the trailhead of this hike and was nominated as one of the best overall caches at the 2006 CITO awards. It's definately worth a look while you are in the area.

Oh, and if you've been holding onto a real cool trade item because you are looking for a cache with enough room to put it in. The Koko Crater Rock Bridge is the cache you have been looking for!
