During last war Barrage Balloons were tested on the Pawlett Hams. From the parking place you can see the old hanger. The balloon was transported from there to one of the Anchors. Note: there is a small publication about the history of hanger IABN 0861833643.
After finding cache you can continue on down Whitehouse lane to the River Parrett from where you can see Combwich across the water. You can view the ‘Anchor Inn’ from here but this side of the river was ‘The Whitehouse Inn’ (1695-1897). It remained a farm house until 1920.
Horse drawn coaches stopped here and passengers stayed at Inn until low tide when they crossed over to Combwich on large wooden beams and resumed journey on new coaches.
It has just come light that this not a balloon anchor after all as many people have thought. It would appear that on top it had a metal framework incorperating a ladder and a Navigational light as guide for navigating river.
