There is a news story from a couple years ago regarding someone hiking where a hiker fell 1,200 feet down a mountain in Washington state and survived in spite of serious head injuries. The harrowing fall took place Monday, July 16, 2012 in the North Cascades National Park which is in the northwest area of the state near the Canadian border.
Few details are available about the 49-year-old man, whose name has not been released, except to say that he suffered head injuries and extremity fractures, though the degree of injury for both is unknown.

Starrucca Viaduct is a stone arch bridge that spans Starrucca Creek near
Lanesboro, Pennsylvania, in the United States.
The Viaduct has a length of 1200 feet and a height 110 feet.
At the time of its construction, the bridge was thought to be the most expensive railway bridge in the world, at a cost of $320,000 (equal to $8,722,462 today). It was the largest stone rail viaduct in the mid-19th century and is still in use.

Joining two hillsides of the Starrucca Valley in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the Starrucca Viaduct stands. Gazing westward from the steel ribbon it supports, one sees the Susquehanna River meandering through rolling hillsides and country fields dotted with houses. Unlike so many other great bridges throughout history, the Starrucca Viaduct inhabits a landscape that is largely unchanged from when it was constructed. So too has the viaduct itself been unchanged. Built in 1847-48, it endures today, almost exactly the way it was over 150 years ago.
Is 1200 feet a long way to walk?
Not at all. 1200 feet is 365.76 meters/0.227272 mi/400 yards., no matter which unit of measurement you use. If you've ever seen those track & field running tracks then you'll know that it's less than a lap.
