Geocache Description:

“Landscapes of great wonder and beauty lie under our feet and all around us. They are discovered in tunnels in the ground, the hearts of flowers, the hollows of trees, fresh-water ponds, seaweed jungles between tides, and even drops of water. Life in these hidden worlds is more startling in reality than anything we can imagine.” ~ Walt Disney

Walt Disney thrilled children and adults alike with cartoons and amusement parks, but he knew that wonder could also be found right outside, in nature. Today, The Nature Conservancy’s 11,500-acre Disney Wilderness Preserve near Kissimmee stands as a testament not only to Disney’s words, but to the power of cooperation, perseverance and innovative thinking. Perhaps most significantly, the preserve has become a national model for sustainable development and state-of-the-art conservation management.  This living laboratory within the Everglades ecosystem contains 3,500 acres of restored wetlands—known as “nature’s sponges” for their ability to capture rain, filter nutrients and replenish our ground water. The Florida Everglades begins north of Lake Okeechobee in Kissimmee. Once spanning nearly 11 million acres, the Everglades has been whittled down through land conversion and drainage. What remains is a heavily altered landscape, one out of sync with Florida’s larger ecology. Changes to the Everglades affect far more than the eight million people and countless species of animals that call the system home. The Everglades Headwater geocache is located at the site of a comprehensive effort to restore the water storage functions of previously ditched and drained freshwater wetlands in the Northern Everglades, resulting in 100,000 acre-feet of natural water storage—efforts that will benefit estuaries, water supply, lands and wildlife throughout the entire Everglades. Preserve Guidelines:
  • Please register at the Welcome Center prior to setting out.
  • Hiking, birding, photography, nature study and other low-impact, non-motorized uses are welcome.
  • All motorized vehicles, ATVs, trail bikes and bicycles are prohibited.
