TMG = Taipei Maokong Gondola
The Taipei Metro Taipei Zoo Station is a terminus on Brown Line, Maokong Gondola Line, and the planned Circular Line of the Taipei Metro. It is located in the Wenshan District, Taipei, Taiwan.
This three-level, elevated station features two side platforms and a single exit. It is located on Xinguang Rd., Sec. 2. In order to deal with patronage to the zoo, an underground parking lot was constructed. It connects to the Maokong Gondola and Taipei Zoo.It is a planned transfer station and terminus with Circular Line.
It was opened on 28 March 1996. To deal with the increasing patronage, construction begins on a second exit on November 2001 before the opening on November 2002. On 20 March 2010; the underground parking lot opens and bus transfer station opens. On 4 July 2007, the Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo Station opens. Due to structural problems resulting from typhoons, the station was closed along with the gondola system on 1 October 2008; and it officially reopened on 30 March 2010.
The Taipei Zoo, sometimes referred to as the "Muzha Zoo", is a public zoological garden in Wenshan District, Taipei, Taiwan. It is the most famous zoological garden in Taiwan and a leader in conservation, research and education, and recreation. It is one of the largest zoos in Asia, with a total area of 165 hectares, of which more than 90 ha are developed.
Taipei Zoo was founded as Maruyama Zoo in 1914, when Taiwan was under Japanese rule, in Mt. Maruyama on the northern suburb of Taihoku. It was originally a private zoological garden owned by a Japanese citizen, Mr. Oe. The Japanese government in Taiwan bought the property the following year and opened it as a public park. After World War II, the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan and the ownership of the park was passed to the Taipei City Government of ROC. An Asian elephant named Lin Wang that served with the Chinese Expeditionary Force during the Second Sino-Japanese War and later relocated to Taiwan with the Kuomintang forces was moved to the zoo, and lived out most of his life and was the most popular animal at the zoo, and the most famous animal in Taiwan until it received 2 pandas from China. Many adults and children alike affectionately called the bull elephant "Grandpa Lin Wang." Due to a need for expansion and for better conditions for the animals, the zoo was moved to its current site in Muzha on the southeastern suburb of Taipei City in 1986. It is, therefore, sometimes referred to as the "Muzha Zoo" to be distinguished from the former "Yuan-shan Zoo".
The facilities comprise exhibition buildings (the Education Center, the Penguin House, the Koala House, the Amphibian and Reptile House and the Insectarium), as well as exhibition areas (the Formosan Animal Area, the Children's Zoo, the Asian Tropical Rainforest Animal Area, the Desert Animal Area, the Australian Animal Area, the African Animal Area, Bird World and the Temperate Zone Animal Area). There is also an outdoor nature observation area, a wetland park, and a special exhibit house.
Zoo Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (no entry after 4:00 p.m.)
