Geocache Description:

This geocache is located under tree cover not far from the Brewster River, north of Stowe.   Parking is available about a tenth of a mile to the west, along route 108.  The terrain between the parking and the cache is broken and fairly uneven, but on AVERAGE is fairly flat other than the first drop-off from the parking lot.   The cache box is a small rectangular clear Tupperware container with a white lid.

The cache lies within view of the Brewster River, which runs north from Stowe, Vermont and joins the Lamoille River near Cambridge and Jeffersonville, Vermont.  The cache is located high enough above the waterline and far enough back that even during the spring floods you should have no worries about whether the cache may have washed away.

Cache history: This geocache was originally placed by WASP & JERRY.  There were a few things about the original listing on the geocaching.com website that were a bit misleading:

  • It was named "Mount Mansfield" despite being well north of the mountain, down by the river, on the far side of the road.
  • It had a terrain rating of 1, implying level, even ground that even a wheelchair could traverse, and in fact, it's more of a 2.5, fairly level but uneven with a bit of a drop-off down once you leave the parking lot.
  • The difficulty of the cache was 1, which wasn't really appropriate given that the serious tree cover made for moderately difficult hunting.

The cache didn't get maintained for a long time, either, and so finally, in October of 2004, Otter and Lemur made a visit, maintained the cache, replaced the original leaky bottle with a new Tupperware container, brought in a new log book, and so on, then offered to adopt the cache.  This request was granted in mid-November of 2004 and the cache listing was updated. (The information, above, is made available so cachers reading the cache logs won't get a mistaken impression of the condition, terrain, and difficulty of the cache; it's in good condition now.)

A second cache maintenance visit was made in the spring of 2005 after a winter 2005 finder left the logbook out of the cache before the snows and it stayed out all winter long.  Ick.  The cache has a new logbook as of spring 2005.

In January of 2006, Okillezzzz agreed to adopt this cache.
