My parents had their vacation home 'Villa Mira' built in 1973. I spent all my childhood vacations here in Denia and have many happy memories here. I've been coming to Denia for 45 years, first with my parents, brother and sisters, and later on with my husband and our two kids, and I want to celebrate this with a couple of caches, the 'Childhood Memories Cache' (CMC) series
.
Of course the major part of our vacations evolved around the beach, especially for us kids. The beach is in a beautiful bend of the Mediterranean Sea. It is actually the bend that shapes the characteristic 'finger' of the Spanish Costa line pointing towards the Baleares islands. From the beach you have a great view towards the coastline north of Denia, with villages and cities as Oliva, Gandia and Cullera, always with the sierras in the back. As a kid I used to think that the 'island' was Ibiza. In fact the island is an optical illusion. It is the mountain of Cullera that is attached to the mainland through a piece of land that is truly flat as a dime. But you don't see that from so far a distance. As kids we explored the beach, and we soon discovered 'The Little River' that was not too far away. We called it 't Rivierke' (Flemish for 'Little River'), because that's just what it is. Around Easter the river often ended in the Mediterranean Sea, but in the summer it partly dried up and didn't make it to the sea any longer. We could spend hours and hours around 'The Little River', fishing, swimming and watching for snakes. It is so much fun to see that today our own kids are fascinated about The Little River as well, and can spend hours here having fun.
