My parents had their vacation home 'Villa Mira' built in Denia about 40 years ago. I spent all my childhood vacations in Denia and the surrounding area, and have many happy memories here. I've been coming to Denia and the surrounding area for 40 years, first with my parents, brother and sisters, and later on with my husband and our two kids, and I want to celebrate this with a couple of caches, the 'Childhood Memories Cache' (CMC) series .
We always came by car. Plane was way too expensive for a family with 4 kids, and it wasn't practical. Planes didn't fly as frequently as today, the infrastructure wasn't what it is today, and we needed a car after all. So, my parents always drove all the way from Belgium to Denia. It took us 2 days, with no air conditioning and 4 not always quiet kids in the back. Still, we had fun during the long travel. We invented all kinds of games that kept us entertained during the 20 hour drive. And having driven the itinerary for so many times we had our usual recognition points and landmarks along the route. One of them was the minaret of La Xara. It was actually one of the last before entering Nova Denia. As a kid I knew as soon as I discovered the glistening red roof of the minaret of La Xara we were almost 'home'. I was always fascinated by that exotic structure, so when I got the idea for the CMC series I knew that I would be hiding a cache here as well. And as it turns out, it is the very first geocache ever in the village of La Xara. I take pride in that! .
The minaret isn't part of a mosk or religious building whatsoever. It was built somewhere in the seventies by a private person who liked the exotic structure. The place is currently abandoned, but renovation works seem to be in progress (with pauses, so it seems). The cache is hidden just outside the grounds in a narrow alley.
Don't worry about the dogs. They WILL bark, but nothing to worry about. Just say hello to the elderly owners, and they will greet you back.
