Take a nice hike up the mountain not only for the several caches on the way up but for the fantastic views that you will get from just about every foot of the hike.
Patterson Mountain is a hike that is doable by just about anyone if you go prepared. The trail is well used and has signs along the way to keep you pointed in the right direction. The trail is a loop with a junction for the summit at about the mid point. I normally take the south trail. Even early in the year you will want to take plenty of water and snacks and give yourself enough time to make the climb. You are looking at about a 2 mile hike one way up to 3484' at the cache location. It normally takes me just over an hour to make the trip up and I am in no hurry so plan on giving yourself at least 2 - 3 hours so you can enjoy the views.
It gets very hot in the summer months so I would recommend an early morning start so you will be coming down when the heat starts to build. Parking is available at the boat launch but a Discovery Pass is required to park there. Next to the entry for the launch is a free parking area but it has very limited space so it can be very iffy.
If you have the kids with, bring a lunch and eat at the top or at the lake and have a cooling swim when you get back down. As always, be safe and have fun!
