Historic Hwy 165 and Ed Carters Yard

It’s hard to believe there was once a small wood frame house where this thicket is today. Most of the people around here didn’t have much but were proud of what little they had. The fenced yard was always neat and well kept with a few flowers and shrubs. It was really no different from the other houses in the area, but there was one thing that did set it aside from the others and that was Mr. Carter liked to do what I call tinker. He would build things. Bird houses, wind mills, whirly mo jigs and most any wind driven ornament you could imagine. They were everywhere and no dought red and white were his favorite colors. It seems as though everything was painted red and white.
In the 50’s we didn’t have all the various forms of entertainment we enjoy today so a Sunday drive could often be the highlight of the week. Maybe it was just to see who had the tallest corn, the best looking garden or the brightest flowers. Maybe someone’s cow had twin calves, a new colt was born, or we just went visiting friends or relatives. Those were simple times, fun times, the good times. Didn’t realize it then but all of that is gone now. It’s even harder to believe what excitement something like that could generate, but it did. Whatever the occasion, a drive by Ed Carter’s was always a treat.
Think I might build me a small windmill and put it out in my yard. Paint it red and white. No one will notice.

Have a nice day and as always, The Fatman and Robin remind you that if it swims, crawls, walks, runs, flies, bites, poisons, stings or stinks, it’s here. Dress accordingly and be safe.
