High atop the Broadway Pier building in Fell’s Point are two remnants of Baltimore’s nautical past. These two masts were at one time the radio transmitter towers for WMH, a coastal maritime radio station that operated from 1921 – 1986. This station would monitor radio distress frequencies and relay ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications. High Frequency stations like this one could, depending on atmospherics and solar activity, transmit and receive radio traffic from ships at sea from around the world. With the advent of satellite communications most of these stations have closed down.
You have most likely never paid much attention to these towers before, but you may have seen them on television. If you remember the television show “Homicide”, this was the building used as the Police Headquarters. In fact, there is still a Baltimore Police door decal on the front doors, a remnant of the filming.
In order to find this cache you must get your radio operators license. (Not really, but you should at least know the code.)
