This Yellow Pohutukawa is in the Bell Block School grounds and planted in memory of Mr W Pitcairn and Gordon 1954. The Yellow Pohutukawa is a rare colour form. It is a coastal evergreen tree in the Myrtle family, Myrtaceae, that produces a brilliant display of a mass of stamens. This yellow-flowered form 'Aurea' descends from a pair discovered in 1840 on Motiti Island off Tauranga by a Mr Potts. This coastal tree can reach 20 metres in height. It was first offered for sale in a 1947 Duncan and Davies catalogue (97). For many years D & D produced it from seed only and all seedlings remain relatively true to type. Do not attempt during school hours as to many young student muggles around. You do not have to enter school grounds to retrieve cache, but there are gates close by so you can read the plaque under the tree.
