Geocache Description:

Riverside of Mandal

Although Mandal did not obtain town status until 1921, there is archaeological evidence that human have lived by the coast here for several thousand years. Little may be known about these early inhabitants but it is apparent that they did not starve. The sea provided a diet rich in fish and molluscs and the forest grew down to its shores.

-

In later years, these local natural resources became the foundation of significant export industries. The forest provided timber export for buildings in London, Amsterdam and Scotland ; Oak was used for building ships; and Oak bark produced tannin for tanning hides and preserving nets. The sea gave up vast amount of lobster for the tables of the wealthy and all classes enjoyed salmon.

-

Salomon is of particular important to Mandal, as evidenced by the towns coat of arms with three silver grey salmon against a sea blue background. The Mandal River which runs through the town was once considered to be the richest salmon river in Norway and may of these fish were destined for the table of the Danish king.

-

For nearly 400 years, trading privileges in Mandal belonged to the town of Landskrona and later Kristiansand. This excluded many of Mandals own residents from trade. Nonetheless, there were those who defied the Danish king and established companies which operated shipyards and maritime salvage yards. These companies eventually went into decline but their legacy - the towns magnificent buildings - remain as memories from days of glory of the past.

-

Today Mandal is a town with around 15.000 inhabitants. It is thriving business, education and administrative centre- developed to be able to welcome thousands of tourists and other visitors. Norways first and most comprehensive conservation plan was drawn up for the town of Mandal and includes around 700 buildings.

"Mandalitten" The story behind Mandalitten is as short as this: A man from the west met in ancient times one mandalitt along the road and asked: - What king of guy are you? The answer came quickly: - I am from Mandal, with whitebread in my hat, a salmon in my pocket, and two eggs in my shoes. And so is the statue made. That's almost needless to mention salmon fishing in the Mandal river in this context.

Stage 3:

Area around the Horse Trough. Mandals most popular place in summer. Farmers used to leave their horses by the trough when they came to town. The windows with the 9 small panes of glass (above the outdoor area of SMOI) is amoung the oldest in town. The stairs leading up to Uranienborg are next to the pedestrian entrance to the underground car park. The Horse Trough is also located next to Lindesnesgårde. The building dates from around 1780 and was both a private home and a place of business. It was built on a large platform of oak, in order to compensate for the sand foundation. High groundwater made it impossible to dig out cellars, so the “cellar” was built above ground, with high stairs into the residence and offices. The heritage building is now owned by the local newspaper, Lindesnes.
