East Pool was one the last working mines in Cornwall.
110 feet refers to the height of the chimney stack and the letters EPAL are still visible in white brick. As well as standing for "East Pool and Agar Limited", "EPAL" was also the trading name for the company selling arsenic. East Pool Mine finally closed in 1945, but Taylor's Engine continued to pump water out of the South Crofty workings until 28 September 1954. The mine stands in the very heart of the Cornish Mining World Heritage site and Taylors Pumping Engine House is now preserved by the National Trust. Inside the cache on the cover of the log is a photograph of the landscape in the 1800s when mining was at its peak. It is taken from a mine about 1 mile down the road towards Camborne looking back on this area. Please take a moment to look at the photo and cast your eye towards Carn Brea monument (looking back towards to car park) and imagine the sight, sound and harshness of the environment then. In early mining the only light miners had underground were tallow candles. They were made of sheep’s fat, produced a lot of smoke and were very smelly! Later carbide lamps were introduced and after that heavy battered-powered lamps. Find the light behind an upright. Kind permission to lay this cache has been given by the National Trust. Muggle rich area, stealth required. Do not visit at night. FTF Redruth Roamers, Sean and Kayleigh and us.
