Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Waller Mill Park (Park is open during daylight hours– check website for exact details).

The Three Sisters are the 3 main agricultural crops of various Native American groups in North America: corn, beans, and squash.

In a technique called companion planting, these 3 crops are planted together so they can benefit from one another.  The corn provides the structure for the beans to climb, the beans provide the nitrogen, and the squash acts as a living mulch to provide shade and weed prevention as well as some protection from critters due to the unpleasant leaf texture.  Corn and beans together virtually provide a balanced diet.  Yet, add the minerals provided by the squash and the balanced diet is complete!

When I was a small child, we would visit my grandmother who had about an acre garden behind her house.  She sent me out one day with an old wash pan to pick a "mess of beans."  I had not learned of this measurement and had to ask her, "Grandma, how much is a mess?"  She replied, "Enough to feed everyone."  And so it was always at my Grandmother's house - they were poor by many standards, but there was always room at the table for anyone who ventured through the screen door - no matter whether they had done anything for anyone to deserve a meal or not.  This is the legacy my grandmother left for me.

I hope you enjoy the hunt.  It's not far off a decent trail, but the last few feet provide the reason for the terrain rating.

The Three Sisters planting method is featured on the reverse of the 2009 US Sacagawea Native American dollar coin. Sorry I don't have one to share except via the background pic.

FTF congrats go to Grandpa Gene, QOC Mike and Tarfu - thanks for helping me validate the coordinates. I guess sometimes your better off taking the first garmin reading than using the averaging function.
