Geocache Description:

PLEASE PULL OFF ON THE SIDE ROAD TO RETRIEVE THIS CACHE.  The traffic can be heavy on Hwy 42.  Cache may not be winter friendly depending on snow depth.

The quilt can be viewed about ¼ mile north on Hwy 42 by pulling off at the State Historical Marker (and grabbing another cache there). You will notice the quilt is painted in “Badger Red”. The only thing missing is the “Flying W”.

The Peninsular Agricultural Research Station (PARS) serves as a field laboratory for fruit specialists. Here they develop pest control programs and conduct other research to improve yields and quality of apples, cherries, grapes, and raspberries. Small grains and vegetable research is also conducted at this facility.

The PARS is also home to the NRSP-6 US Potato Genebank, which maintains the world's largest collection of wild and cultivated potato species. The US Potato Genebank's mission is to collect, classify, preserve, evaluate and distribute nearly 5,000 samples of more than 150 potato species.

The PARS partners with Door County and Kewaunee County Extension Offices to coordinate educational and outreach efforts. PARS is also the site of "The Garden Door", a cooperative project with the Door County Master Gardener's Association. The Garden Door is a 1 acre showcase flower and landscape garden.

This cache will bring you to a viewing location for one of the Barn Quilts of Door County.  The quilt is one of 45 placed in Door County between 2010-2012 as a joint project of the UW-Extension, 4-H members and leaders, FFA members and alumni, local quilt guild members and other volunteers.
The goals of the Door County Barn Quilt Project are:
• Promote the agricultural heritage of Door Co.
• Provide education about the art and history of quilting
• Highlight the architecture and historical significance of barns throughout Door Co.
• Encourage economic development by promoting rural tourism
• Build an adult-youth partnership through the implementation of the project

More information on the project can be seen at https://www.facebook.com/BarnQuiltsOfDoorCounty

Please tread lightly as you search out the caches.  CITO and BYOP.  Feel free to post pictures of the barn quilts, but please don’t give away the cache location or container.
Happy Caching!
