Geocache Description:

This cache is placed on the Amy Gillett Bikeway which continues the sporting memories trail. The Adelaide Hills Council dedicated a bikeway in the name of Amy Gillett who died tragically doing what she loved, cycling. This cache remembers David Palmer, Australian Squash legend

David Troy Palmer was born in Lithgow, New South Wales.

Mr & Mrs Palmer were active squash players, so the progression for David was natural turning professional at the age of 18.

David began playing professional squash in 1994 and went on to play for the Australian Professional Association (PSA). He won the Super Series finals in 2002, the World Open in 2002 and 2006; the British Open in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2008; and the Australian Open in 2008. He attained World No. 1 ranking in September 2001 and again (for one month) in February 2006, two months after becoming the first Australian for twenty years to win the British Open title.

After some time away from Australia, David Palmer returned to his homeland in August 2008 to compete in the Australian Open - a title he had yet to win. The country's famed player did not disappoint, beating Kiwi Kashif Shuja in the final to put his name on the trophy alongside fellow Australian players such as Geoff Hunt, Chris Dittmar, Rodney and Brett Martin.

David (or The Marine) retired in 2011 and now lives in Orlando, Florida in the United States where his new role of coach inspires the next generation of squash players at the Academy.

From his own Squash Academy in Orlando, (David Palmer Squash Academy) David caters for Junior Squash Camps to Junior and Adult instruction, including Pro Players who come to train at the Academy.

Married to Mel, David is the proud father of two daughters Kayla and Miley Jane.
