Geocache Description:

Hillgrove General Cemetery is a heritage listed Victorian cemetery, originally having a formal layout and trees planted along its avenues and around its boundaries. Much of the cemetery is now covered in regrowth including orchid species, insectivorous plants, and a few uncommon/rare trees.

As you enter through the East Gate of the cemetery you will immediately see the Church of England section on your right, and the Roman Catholic section on your left. There is a mowed pathway that takes you through to the Presbyterian section and, right down the back, the Methodist section. The North-Western burial compartment is now fully wooded. This is the general section. There is also a small Jewish section against the northern fence in that overgrown quarter.

A recent (2015) survey of the Victorian avenue tree plantings was conducted in Hillgrove Cemetery. The report shows that not only do some signs of the original access carriageways still exist under the regrowth, in line with the South and East gates, there are also 17 remaining identifiable avenue trees out of the many that were originally planted in pairs along those carriageways. These trees were all planted in the late 1800's and have been tagged with a number and a bit of yellow paper ribbon. Most of them are still alive and include Stone Pines (same as the famous Lone Pine) that live for 200 years and are found in many old Victorian cemeteries. The two intersecting carriageways formed a Christian 'Cross' with the North-South avenue being a little West of centre, and the East-West avenue dividing the block down the middle. If you walk the avenues through the dogwood scrub you can still discern the original guttering in places

Given the recent survey I have relocated this cache a little so it is now at the original Cross-roads (and incidentally out of the way, should subsequent work be done to re-establish the original avenues and tree plantings!). The published coordinates have been updated
