The Metz Lookout sits directly above the part of the gorge covered by mining leases held by Hillgrove Mines, so this part of the gorge itself is look-but-don't-climb. As this is a shaft-mined area, the mining activity really isn't very obtrusive. The mine's winding track that wends its way into the depth of the gorge is best viewed from this platform. Looking into the gorge system to the South from here is a lovely view of the overlapping ridge country of the National Park.
There is a wing-fence of sorts extending from the viewing platform but watch the kids anyway. There are tables and small bush barbecues so you can make a picnic of it. Please practice CITO here. Watch your footing if the ground is wet.
The picnic area itself is on private land stocked with sheep, horses and alpacas. You need to drive through the unfendced paddock to reach it. Please keep dogs in check and stay around the picnic area.

1-Nov-2014 update
The picnic area has had a facelift and the lookout platform has been rebuilt. There is now a sealed, one-lane turnaround for vehicles with a couple of spots to park. The track down to the lookout is also sealed and takes a more gentle sloping route down. It is wide enough to push a pram or wheelchair along. Probably still too steep to self-propel a wheelchair, so having an extra person handy to help wheeled warriors would be wise. A fair bit of loose soil and rocks have been pushed into contours below the road and track, so be careful not to turn an ankle.
