I’ve been enjoying jazz music since I was a teenager, and while my tastes are quite varied, I tend to gravitate to the small ensembles like those led by Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, ... But once in a while, I really want to blow off the roof with loud, hard blowing, rolling thunder, big band music and my favourites on that score are Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. While both of these guys could blow with any of the small groups, they are unbeatable when leading their own big bands.
My favourite Maynard moment occurred at the finale of a concert at the NAC when his entire horn section spread out around the perimetre of the hall and blew a version of Hey Jude that must have resounded all the way to Parliament Hill!
And among the records that I keep returning to, Buddy’s Swingin’ New Big Band featuring his West Side Story Suite is a classic.
The cache is a small bison tube (Lee Valley) hanging from a branch along the bike path along the Ottawa River. It should be winter friendly.
Parking is available not too far away on nearby sidestreets.

J’écoute du jazz depuis mon adolescence, et bien que mes goûts soient très variés, j’ai tendance à graviter autour des petits ensembles comme ceux que dirigent Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, ... Par contre, il m’arrive d’avoir envie de faire sauter le toit en écoutant des cuivres qui crachent des éclairs sur un roulement de drums du tonerre! Et pour ces moments, il n’y a personne qui bat Maynard Ferguson et Buddy Rich. Ces deux messieurs ont souvent performé avec beaucoup d’aplomb avec des petits ensembles. Mais quand ils sont à la direction de leur propre “big band”, ils sont intouchables.
Parmi mes meilleurs souvenirs de Maynard, pour terminer un concert au CNA, il avait déployé toute sa section de cuivres autour de la salle et ils nous ont joué un Hey Jude qui a dû résonner jusqu’à la colline parlementaire!
Et parmi mes disques préférés, je retourne régulièrement au Swingin’ New Big Band de Buddy Rich don’t la pièce maîtresse, West Side Story Suite est un classique.
La cache est un petit "bison tube" (Lee Valley) accroché à une branche le long de la piste cyclable près de la Rivière des Outaouais. Elle devrait être accessible en hiver.
