Geocache Description:

Cache placed by National Trust. Maiden Moor comes as a delightfully peaceful experience after the crowds on Cat Bells as most people don't go further along the ridgeline than Hause Gate. This is a chance to get some peace and quiet with great views of Derwent Water, the Jaws of Borrowdale and of the Newlands Valley.

Maiden Moor is an interesting point in Borrowdale, geologically speaking. There's a choice of paths when you get to the first (false) 'summit' cairn - if you're not afraid of heights, the more interesting path follows the edge of the crags, with dramatic views opening down into the Newlands Valley. From the actual summit you get a very clear view of the spoil heap and entrance of Goldscope mine. There are 'coffin' tunnels in Goldscope that survive since they were carved by pick-axe and hand tools by miners in the 16th century - named coffin because the miners removed the bare minimum of rock so the tunnel is narrow and the head and feet and broad at the shoulders, a classic coffin shape.

You can start from many places - either park at Rosthwaite and go up to High Spy first, or park at Grange (if you can get a spot) or at Little Town in the Newlands Valley and go up via Hause Gate,
