CCCNP – Sinking Creek

Sinking Creek – Reenters Creek Here
The CCCNP caches are in some of the scenic areas of the Preserve and, on the hike to the caches, one will pass many other scenic and beautiful areas. Please use the trail map available at the location of the Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve cache and plan your route carefully to minimize your hiking distance. To find all the caches in one trip could require as much as a 10-12 mile hike.
CCNP – Sinking Creek
Sinking Creek is another interesting location in Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve and is near Delony Hollow campground. The water flowing in a nearby creek disappears into the hillside where it runs underground on toward the canyon below only to resurface a short distance down the hillside. If there has been a significant rain, this feature may not be obvious since the higher volume of water will flow both on the surface and in the underground creek. The photo above shows where the underground flow returns to the surface.
Without any side trips to other caches, the shortest round trip route to this cache from the main Preserve entrance is approximately 5.5 miles. If one is hunting only the caches in the northern part of the Preserve, using the North entrance off Behel Lane would save a lot of hiking distance. The parking area for the North Entrance is not on Preserve Property but permission has been granted to park there. However, the property owners request that visitors using this entrance go to the main entrance to sign in and obtain a pass to put on the dashboard of the vehicle identifying it as belonging to a Preserve visitor. This also gives the Preserve owners a record of your visit.
If you use the North Entrance to access any cache other than CCCNP – Northeast Falls, USE EXTREME CAUTION! The CCCNP – Northeast Falls cache is above the falls, far enough away that there is little danger. However, the trail down the side of the falls is narrow, precarious and can be very slippery and there are no guardrails in this natural area. This is the only part of the trail that presents significant hazard.
Please do not log this cache as a team find unless the team is a family unit registered only as a family unit. If the individual members of the team are geocaching.com members then each member of the team should sign the log individually. It is not fair to the geocachers that hike up to 10 or 12 miles round trip to find the caches in the Preserve to have “team” members log a find without actually going to the cache site. Log entries not meeting these requirements may be deleted.
