Once work began on the construction of the dam, the valley just beyond Blaen y Cwm farm became transformed into a village of timber and corrugated iron. This was bare mountain at the time with no forest and the railway line ran on another 2 miles to the dam construction site. You will need a pencil to sign the log and as the GPS signal is often poor here a more helpful hint has been provided.
Officially known as Blaen y Cwm village by the nature of the buildings it soon became known as Tin Town. As work progressed more and more workers were needed and by 1925 400 people lived here. The foundations of the dam had to be excavated and vast amounts of stone were being quarried nearby. Provision of a range of accommodation and facilities soon became a priority with a lodging house for unmarried men, a canteen and bath house, a chapel and hospital. Family homes were provided for married men and with these families came children. Under the Education Act a school had to be provided. This was located on a level area on the other side of the river accessed by a footbridge. Built to accommodate 60 children there were two classrooms, one for mixed juniors the other for mixed seniors. A short distance away was the headmasters house, one of the few buildings which still has its original foundations. The house was dismantled in 1928 and re-erected at Llanbedr where it was in 1974 encased in concrete blocks and made into an attractive bungalow. Down-stream from the school was the Isolation Hospital and to the left of the bridge on the other side are the remains of the bath-house.Permission kindly granted by Natural Resources Wales.
