St Mary's Church, Stainburn, was built in the 12th century as a chapel of ease in the parish of Kirkby Overblow. It is constructed in gritstone rubble and has a graduated stone slate roof.
Except for the 17th Century additions of the porch and bellcote, and the vestry put on at the time of the 1894 building restoration its original Norman shape is retained as are the splendid Norman chancel arch and font inside. The roof dates from the late mediaeval period and the oak pews from c.1600. Having undergone only minimal restoration, St Mary’s remains an enchanting place of great antiquity.
It is a Grade 1 Listed Building and maintained by Churches Conservation Trust charity though no longer used as a regular place of worship.
Near the Church entrance you will find the graves of Robbie and Peggy... Robbie was born on A.BC.19DE, Peggy was born on F.G.19HJ
The cache can be found at N 53° 55.E(J+B)G W 001° 37.(A-D)H(F-C) which will take you to a spot outside the Church grounds - you are looking for a small Clip Lock box at ground level
There is parking for a car right outside the Church Gate but this is on a very narrow road, please drive carefully and park responsibly.
The cache can easily be combined with Pinkypurple's excellent 'Huby Do' series, the Church being less than a quarter of a mile from GC3VED4
