PARASAUROLOPHUS
It's name means “near crested lizard”. It is a HERBIVORE and scientists think it ate grass, flowering plants, pine needles, twigs and leaves. The PARASAUROLOPHUS was a biped and a quadruped walking on both 2 feet and 4 feet at various times. It has a large tube like crest on top of it's head. Scientists think that the crest was used to make communication sounds over long distances. There is a computer modeling of a well preserved specimen of a pair of tubicen, that has allowed the reconstruction of the possible sound it's crest produced. You can listen to it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ3Ra-WdZrs (5 minutes 11 seconds) This soundscape has rain sounds in the background, combined with the sounds of the PARASAUROLOPHUS...it has an intro, the soundscape, then some credits, followed by the 2 distinct sounds. The crest is hollow with tubes leading from the nostrils to the end of the crest, then reversing direction back down the crest into the skull. This anatomy causes peaks and valleys in the sound. The PARASAUROLOPHUS is a duck billed dinosaur which lived in the late Crestaceous period about 76.5 – 73 million years ago. In present day Western North America, remains and fossils have been found in Alberta, Utah and New Mexico.
