CAMP HUALAPAI Historian Sharlot Hall once posed for a photo next to a sign near the former Walnut Creek Forest Ranger Station. The US Forest Service provided the marker, which no longer stands in its original location 40 miles northwest of Prescott. The sign reads, “Site of  Old Camp Hualapai, formerly Camp Toll Gate. Important post for the protection of the freight and emigrant road between Fort Whipple and the Colorado River. Under the command of General George Crook. Established in 1863, abandoned in 1873. A short distance north is the burying ground of early settlers. Erected in 1953, by the General George Crook Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.” Camp Toll Gate was renamed Camp Hualapai,. The Camp Hualapai Post Office operated from 1873 to 1874, was discontinued, and then reestablished from 1875 to 1879. Jane Oswald, appointed in 1874, was the first postmistress in Arizona.
