Drive along this lonely country road and you will discover an interesting natural phenomenon. At the base of a hill, with your vehicle turned off and put into neutral, you will suddenly feel the car being dragged up the hill, backwards, without any motor power. Some believe that it is generated by a magnetic force so strong that it can pull a car up a hill. It is a very fascinating experience.
Of course, there is a logical explanation for this. Also called a "gravity hill", it is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope.
What contributes to the illusion is a completely, or almost, obstructed horizon. Without a horizon, it is hard to judge the slope of a surface. Objects such as trees may be leaning, offsetting the visual reference. Our brains want to assume that these objects are perpendicular to the ground.
There are hundreds of recognized gravity hills around the world and quite a number of them in Canada. The most famous is near Moncton, New Brunswick where you have to pay for the experience. Other hills in Ontario are situated in Burlington and Caledon.
When you arrive at GZ, drive a few meters more until you feel you are at the base of the "hill". It is approximately 1.6 kms from the main road. Turn your motor off and put your vehicle in neutral. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
