The cache is designed to represent a certain aspect of Venice, with the location, the title and the inner container. The original cache had been taken and this is now version 6, I think. The outer camouflaged casing is attached via wire to the post, hidden underneath an older wooden cache casing. Inside the tube is a stripy container which resembles where a weary gondolier may be looking to tie up their gondola. (It is half-pencil and half-tube)
The inner log sheet holder represents another familiar sight along the Venetian waterways. When replacing the log it will need rolling up tightly to fit back in the tube.
O SOLE MIO is one of the most traditional songs one would expect a gondolier to sing, largely thanks to an old ice cream advert with altered lyrics! The canals here are quite different to the venetian canals, with the ones in Venice being a blue/green colour as it is sea water, and there is very little greenery next to the canals except for the occasional park. In total there are 354 bridges in Venice connecting the 118 small islands, divided into 6 main districts, and most of venice is free from vehicles so somewhat peaceful (other than the tourists in certain spots). The city also acts as a hide to over 50 geocaches tucked away in some great little spots. Occasionally Venice has an exceptionally high tide called acqua alta and many paths are underwater, with people getting round on temporary walkways which are much like school desks lined up end-to-end. Thankfully we don't have that flooding on our canal.
The cache location here has a bridge and boat moorings in sight, very peaceful and with a bench close-by. You may have to choose a time when no one is fishing nearby too. It is not at the water's edge and should also be accessible from a wheelchair if you can reach down to ground level OK. Watch out for nettles though.
The other 2 caches in this series are:
Kissing Tree - 'The Proposal'
Big Day - 'The Wedding'
