Geocache Description:

Just wait a plane and you will never forget it.

Siauliai aerodrome started its activities before Second World War. It was built in 1935 and was used as the military base for the independent Lithuanian Air Force. After WW II, the Soviet Air Force took over Siauliai airport, and built two parallel 3,5 and 3,2-km length runways. After the re-establishment of Lithuanian independence, the aerodrome had to be reconstructed in order to meet civil requirements. So, it was decided to adapt the airport to international cargo and passenger transportation. In 1994, the Lithuanian Government granted Siauliai airport the status of an international airport. For this purpose, the navigation system was installed; the new air traffic control tower was built; runway surface was renovated; taxiways were reconstructed; drainage and lighting systems restored. The owner and keeper of the airport is the Lithuanian army, and the priority of using the aerodrome goes to military flights. Currently, civil aircraft operations and ground handling services are organized by Municipal Company Siauliu oro uostas, established in 2004. So, the airport serves as military and civil airport. The company uses military aerodrome infrastructure to serve civil aircraft. This is the only airport of such type in Lithuania. Siauliai International Airport is situated in the Northeast Europe, North of Lithuania, 7 km from Siauliai city, the fourth largest city of Lithuania with well-developed industry, trade and transport. The city boasts a convenient geographical location since the important EU highways Via Baltica and Via Hanseatica, linking Berlin, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and other major cities, intersect nearby the city. Siauliai International Airport is the only airport in the Eastern part of the European Union to apply no restrictions on noise in the daytime and at night. The largest in the Baltic’s runway along with the state-of-the-art equipment allow servicing even the heaviest aircraft 24 hours a day year-round under the most complicated meteorological conditions. Air traffic and aeronautical information services to military aviation and civilian aircraft are provided by the state company "Oro Navigacija". The airport area navigation instrument approach permeability is six flights per hour, but if necessary, permeability can be increased by installing additional air traffic control radar, or using Palanga airport air traffic control center capabilities.
