Standing Dead Trees: Just past where the Red trail (Dogwood) connects to the NJ Brigade trail & Cross Estate (to Patriot’s Path). Red Cedar Junipers were the first to grow in the abandoned open logged areas of this hillside. They prefer full sun habitats. Now there are oak and hickory trees that have shaded the junipers out. There is a natural succession of plants from field to forest leading to a particular climax community of plants. Many of the standing dead trees have now fallen and create very important habitats for many animals.

The Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary geocaching project is an exciting partnership between New Jersey Audubon's Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary and The Northern New Jersey Cachers, who were consulted to help develop and implement the new Educational Geotrail.
