Vietnam Era Memorial: 2014 Canby Geocoin Challenge Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

SpockProf: This was my second geocache puzzle placed and my first geocoin challenge cache. I followed the example of Ornith who placed a similar geocoin challenge cache at this site in 2011. This site jumped out at me just begging to bring more geocachers, family and friends to enjoy and learn from this wonderful memorial.

The geocoin challenge has been over for nearly 6 years and all coins are distributed. It has met it's original purpose well and continued it's role with excellence. It is with a heavy heart that I retire this geocache that has brought so much joy to others over the years. It even won first place as the best GeoOregon geocache in 2015 voted by the number of favorite points earned in it's first year. This was the favorite of my geocache placements. I am very happy that it brought so much joy to those who visited. Thank you all for visiting. May the memories of your visit bring you understanding, comfort, thankfulness and joy. This memorial site is now open for the next generation cache. Happy geocaching!

Geocache Description:

Thank you to all who visited and left a favorites star for this cache. That recognition made this cache a 1st place winner in Ornith's top-favorite Oregon mystery/letterbox/multi-cache published in 2014. The recognition is really due to the memorial of those that served our country and help us realize the things in our lives that matter most. Thank you for spending a few minutes here to remember and honor those who have served and who continue to serve.

All coins are now given out. The caches will remain for your enjoyment.

This cache is part of the 2014 Canby Geocoin Challenge. It is placed here in tribute to the first multi-cache at this site by Ornith and Queens Blessing for the 2011 Canby Chamber of Commerce Geocoin Challenge.

This is an excerpt from the "Road Map of Canby Oregon", published by the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce:

Situated at the south entrance of Canby along Highway 99E, the Memorial is an extraordinary place of healing, honoring everyone who served our nation during the Vietnam War Era. Aloft on its pedestal is the most recognized helicopter type in the world - the Bell UH-1 better known as the "Huey". Thousands of lives were saved because of the dependability of the Huey and bravery of her crews. The statue, "A Hero's Prayer", sculpted by renowned artist Wayne E. Hyde, stands below depicting a soldier carrying his wounded buddy and waiting with a young Vietnamese girl for rescue. The setting suggests Vietnam and its rural agricultural rice paddies. You'll also see the Buddhist bell with the inscription in Vietnamese: "Believe in Peace."

Take your time walking around the memorial. You will find objects and quotes that are clues to determine the coordinates of the final cache location.

  • G = The number of attributes of the war experience embodied in "A Hero's Prayer"
  • H = The number of letters in the first tactical call sign of the medevac "Huey"

Checksum of the numbers (A+B+C+D) is 9
