Geocache Description:

The building you see is Kirkhill Tollbar. DO NOT ENTER THE BUILDING! .In 1789 the road builder John Metcalfe – “Blind Jack Of Knaresborough”- constructed  a new turnpike route that gradually replaced the King`s Highway. Access to the GZ is from Rock Hall Road, now more of a track than a usable road. It was a Toll Road which led to Kirkhill Toll Bar.

This is a series of caches above Haslingden.

It is to show those locals that don’t know, what is on their doorstep and visitors how quickly you can be up on the hills and surrounding greenery. The route follows a walk we frequently did with our first dog Bessie, a Jack Russell.

The route follows footpaths and tracks all the way although the terrain does vary from slight inclines to quite steep climbs.  PLEASE WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR as it can be quite muddy and the winds can be cold up there. Don`t forget to CITO too.  Waste bins are located at Top O` Slate.

The caches are numbered from near the start of what was our walk. You can park on Kirhill Avenue and access the footpaths from there. PLEASE BE CORTEOUS TO THE RESIDENTS IF THIS IS WHERE YOU CHOOSE TO START.

Alternatively, you could park at Top O` Slate , near to the Halo Panopticon, and start the series from number 3.

The series is dedicated to Bessie who we re-homed by default. She was originally found as a puppy in a shopping bag on a canal by a guy who took her to a rescue centre. From there she was re-homed by my in-laws as a companion for their golden retriever Boston. Bessie was a bad influence on Boston and the 2 would often go wandering off to explore their surrounding area. Unfortunately, Bessie, being a Jack Russell, had a very strong hunting instinct and decided to kill and bring home a bantum hen belonging to one of the locals. Before she could get into more trouble or the owner realised who the culprit was the in-laws decided to re-home her.

We took her on trial for the weekend at 18 months old and she spent the next 16 years as our beloved companion.

She was a star and adored by all that met her. She thought she was a human at times though the wolf soon kicked in when out on the fells and she got the scent of something.  She walked/ran at least 3 times the distance we always did and completed the Wainwright`s Fells in the Lake District at 15 years old in 2004.
