"Azorean Emigration to Canada was only possible in 1953 after the signing of bilateral agreements between Portugal and Canada, on the entry of immigrants. However, the contact of the Azorean with this country dates back to the period of "discovery" of the North American continent.
Despite the Pioneers (designation for the first Portuguese immigrants in Canada in 1953) having landed at the port of Halifax, in the province of Nova Scotia, they settled in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec as well as in British Columbia, acting in the areas of agriculture, construction, railway, iron and services. Despite the late emigration, the flow of immigrants to this country recorded high numbers in the thousands per year.
Like the United States, the late 60's and seventies were the time when the greatest number of Azorean departure to Canada. After this period, as is generally the Azorean emigration declined, due to the constant improvement of living conditions in the archipelago.
Currently, the Azorean communities resident in Canada are located in the province of Ontario, in the city of Toronto and surrounding areas, Quebec, in the cities of Montreal and surroundings in British Columbia in Vancouver, also lying in Kitimat on the northern edge of this province, in the province of Manitoba, the city of Winnipeg and Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria, the province of Alberta.
The vast majority of Portuguese immigrants who are in Canada, are Azorean. It is a beautiful community, especially in the Toronto area but also in Montreal, Winnipeg and Vancouver. We speak mainly of first and second generations, many integrated well. In Gatineau, in the province of Quebec, there is a very strong original community north of San Miguel, which constitutes more than half the population of this great city. The young community begins to have an above average academic background and that integration begins to happen we need the younger people go to college to have this intervention capacity. But we already have many Portuguese to intervene in politics in Canada politicians.
As it has happened with other communities in other countries, Azorean communities resident in Canada celebrate the major religious festivals of the Archipelago, preserving its cultural identity through various manifestations. Also developed the associative movement and encouraged teaching of Portuguese as well as the creation of various media. "

“Os açorianos e açorianas que deixaram o arquipélago e rumaram ao Canadá levaram consigo a sua maneira de ser e estar no mundo, a sua cultura e tradições, dimensões que enformam a nossa Açorianidade”, salientou, acrescentando que, à medida que foram chegando ao Canadá, os emigrantes açorianos fixaram-se em várias cidades, onde “foram criando as instituições que lhes dariam segurança e visibilidade nas sociedades de acolhimento”.
“Embora distantes da sua terra de origem, os açorianos nunca deixaram de cultivar as suas raízes, vivenciando e divulgando sempre, ao longo dos anos, as tradições, usos e costumes que nos conferem uma identidade tão própria. De salientar ainda o importante contributo das comunidades açorianas na promoção, desenvolvimento e progresso da sociedade canadiana”.
“A emigração de açorianos para o Canadá só foi possível em 1953, após a assinatura de acordos bilaterais entre Portugal e o Canadá, sobre a entrada de emigrantes. No entanto, o contacto dos açorianos com este país remonta ao período da “descoberta” do continente norte-americano.
Apesar dos pioneiros (designação para os primeiros emigrantes portugueses no Canadá, em 1953) terem desembarcado no porto de Halifax, na província da Nova Escócia, estes fixaram-se nas províncias de Ontário e Québec, bem como na British Columbia, exercendo funções na área da agricultura, construção civil, caminho-de-ferro e serviços. Apesar da emigração tardia, o fluxo de emigrantes para este país registou números elevados na ordem dos milhares ao ano.
Tal como os Estados Unidos, os finais da década de 60 e setenta foram a época que registou o maior número de saída de açorianos para o Canadá. Após este período e como acontece na generalidade a emigração açoriana entrou em declínio, devido a constante melhoria das condições de vida no arquipélago.
Atualmente, as comunidades açorianas residentes no Canadá situam-se na província do Ontário, na cidade de Toronto e arredores, no Québec, nas cidades de Montreal e arredores, na British Columbia, em Vancouver, encontrando-se também em Kitimat no extremo norte desta província, na província de Manitoba, na cidade de Winnipeg e em Calgary, Edmonton e Victória, na província de Alberta.
A vasta maioria dos emigrantes portugueses que está no Canadá, é açoriana. É uma belíssima comunidade, estão especialmente na zona de Toronto mas também em Montreal, Winnipeg e Vancouver. Falamos basicamente de primeiras e segundas gerações, muitas bem integradas. Em Gatineau, na província do Quebeque, há uma fortíssima comunidade originária do norte de São Miguel e que constitui mais de metade da população dessa grande cidade. A comunidade jovem começa a ter uma formação académica acima da média e para que a integração comece a acontecer é preciso que as camadas mais jovens vão para as universidades para terem essa capacidade interventiva. Mas já temos muitos políticos portugueses a intervirem na política no Canadá.
À semelhança do que aconteceu com outras comunidades noutros países, a comunidade açoriana residente no Canadá celebra as principais festas religiosas do Arquipélago, preserva a sua identidade cultural através das mais diversas manifestações. Desenvolveu, igualmente, o movimento associativo e incentivou ensino da língua portuguesa, assim como a criação de diversos órgãos de comunicação social”.
