Hillcrest Park is a 30 acre parcel and headquarters for the Mount Vernon Parks Department. It features a modern playground, soccer and baseball field, tennis courts as well as the hallmark Hillcrest Lodge, built in 1938 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. There is a large gazebo, with attached BBQ pit. The facilities, including the Japanese garden are available for rent.
The park has seen many transformations over the years, including a zoo that existed from the 70's to the early 80's. S 11th St used to pass through the park and was closed in the 90's to increase safety for the park users. The park hosts many annual events, including the annual Kiwanis Salmon BBQ, and the Haunted Forest each Halloween.
This cache is located within the boundaries of what used to be the zoo. The tree cover has its expected impact on the coords.
