The Ford Freeway follows the path of the Native American St. Joseph Trail east –west across Michigan.  This road was very important in World War II, providing access to the Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan.  Its interchange with the Lodge Freeway in Detroit, built in 1953, is significant as the first full-speed freeway-to-freeway interchange built in the United States.

The total length of road in the United States is 1,585 miles, 275 of which are in Michigan, It stretches from Port Huron, Michigan to Billings, Montana and goes through several major cities including Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
