Geocache Description:

What will you find inside a paintbox?
Just open the lid and see what intriguing mysteries are revealed. You are about to undertake a journey through West Auckland in a quest to find answers to conundrums that have bewildered philosophers since time immemorial. Visit eight locations to gather information, which will ultimately lead you to the cache.

NOTE: The information that you seek will be found on familiar road-side objects. Only information found on the sides of these objects will be valid – not the upper surface.

The above co-ordinates are located nowhere in particular.

(a) How many birds are sitting on the power lines? This value is ‘d’
(b) Number of power poles. This value is ‘e’
(c) Count the number of windows visible or partly visible on the side facing the road. This value is ‘f’
N = (f x e) - d
It would appear that Transpower had decided that the art-work, portraying an early 60s villa, was no longer in keeping with the aspirations of modern society and contemporary aesthetic design. Consequently a tasteful dark green presentation that did not conflict with nearby residential properties was deemed highly desirable, so as not to impinge on the value of the said properties. The uniform dark green presentation proved to be very challenging and did not lend itself to re-construction of the various formulae required to derive numerical values. Therefore use the following information to enable progress with determining the final cache location.
d = 6
e = 5
f = 10

Waypoint PB-D
Co-ordinates S 36 49.372, E174 36.695
Painting by Mark Whyte
How many windows can you see on the painting facing the road? This value is 'R'

(e) Who is it that should not drive the bus? Having found the name, now find the difference between the sum
of the alphabetical positions of the first three letters and the alphabetical positions of the last three
letters. This value is ‘m’
T = ((h x j) ÷ m) x (g + k)

Waypoint PB-F
Co-ordinates S 36 49.807, E174 38.029

On the North East facing side there are two birds. Each bird sits astride a large bunch of Nikau berries. Count the number of berries beside each bird and determine the difference. This value is 'p
How many birds are present. This value is 'q'

Multiply month by ‘X’ and subtract year. This value is ‘r’
How many rivets can you see that retain the circular front face of the smoke box door? This value is ‘s’
Unfortunately since the geocache was created ‘Auckland Transport’ has decided to be creative and have bolted a ‘Gangers Test’ box onto the front of the engine, obscuring some of the rivets. So please add 3 to your rivet count.
Q = r - s + 4

The cache will be found at:
S 36 w.x
E 174 y.z
Where
w = (T – (N x P)) ÷ (R/G) - P
x = (S x R) + (G x P) - (G + P) + 7
y = (M/R) + (Q - R)
z = ((T + M) - Q) - (S/G) - ((Q - P)/(P - G)) - ((Q/2) + P )

At each waypoint you need to answer some simple questions in order to find the value of a particular letter, (e.g. G, M, N etc.). You can check if you have found the correct value (number) for each of the waypoints using the following procedure:
Add the values for G, M, N & R to find a three digit number. Then add these three digits to find the next number. Continue the process until you arrive at a single digit. This number should be ‘6’
Repeat using letters T, S, P & Q
The final number for this group is ‘7’

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure accuracy and fairness, errors can occur. Should there be any aspects which are ambiguous or inaccurate please contact cache owner for clarification or correction of information as deemed necessary
