Once you have Signed the log why not have a look about the old iron works site or the walkways nearby .

The Wilsontown Ironworks were founded in 1779 on the banks of the Mouse Water to exploit the abundant coal and ironstone resources on the Cleugh estate, the property of Robert Wilson, one of the three brothers who founded the enterprise. The works developed over the following three decades, and a sizeable village rapidly developed around it, housing 400 people by 1794 and nearly 2,000 by 1812, when the company employed 521 men, but managerial failures and costly legal disputes between the owners led the collapse of the company in 1812. William Dixon purchased the business in 1821 and restarted production, but in 1842 the Ironworks were finally closed, although coal mining continued in the area into the middle of the twentieth century. A walk around the Ironworks today is nothing like it would have been 200 years ago. With many paths to explore you will stand a chance of not only discovering hidden features from the Ironworks but also some of the plants and animals that now call this place home. The remains of industry have now been colonised by wonderful plants such as quaking grass, wild thyme and field gentian. In summer, thes flower-rich areas attract insects like butterfiles and six spont burnet moth. The grass lands are teeming with dy-flying moths such as the latticed heath and the chimney sweeper.Autumn is also a great time to experience the natural heritage of the Ironworks. Transport Links You'll find the Ironworks in Heathland Forest, There is a small car park and 3 waymarked paths to follow that range from 0.5 miles / 800m to 1.25miles / 2km in length. The closest town is Forth. By Car Join the A706 from Junction 4 of the M8. Proceed south along the A706 towards Lanark. Take the B7016 north of Forth and follow signs for Wilsontown where you will find the carpark and entrance's into this wonderfull area. Please place back where found, and cover it up. Thankyou. Congratulation to HundyMundy on FTF.
