Geocache Description:

This is a grab-n-go geocache. Permission to place the cache was granted by John Lewandowski, Marketing and Retail Manager.

The original South Division High School was built in 1890 after a motion by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. It was the second oldest high school in the MPS system after the old East Division High School which is now called Riverside University High School.

A new South Division High School opened in 1977, three blocks from the old school. Almost nothing was brought over from the old building, but the crowning copper dome was preserved when the building was demolished in 1978. Efforts to bring it back home to be incorporated into the new building failed and it was sold to a Franklin antique dealer who used it as a storage shed. When the antique dealer went out of business in 1997, the dome was in the hands of a bank.

The school’s alumni association hoped to return it to the school, but failed because the group couldn’t afford the bank’s price tag of $30,000. It was then in 1998 that another local business bought the dome. And it was the year 2002 when that business finally hoisted the refurbished 18,000 pound dome atop their new shopping and office facility. The site also houses South Division memorabilia and has even been host to some South Division reunions.
