Welcome to Yorkton, a city of over 16,000 people in eastern Saskatchewan. Founded on May 12th 1882 at a cost of $300,000 by the York colonists from Ontario. A city full of history, landmarks and located near several nice lakes and parks. Along with many Saskatchewan towns and cities, it also proves that we rule the NHL. Players like Metro Prystai, Larry Popien, Brent Fedyk and Clayton Pachal were from Yorkton and played in the NHL and names like Jared Stoll and Joe Kocher played hockey in Yorkton before moving on to the NHL. Dave rodney, A good friend of mine that I grew up with in Yorkton was Saskatchewan's first Mount Everest climber and Canada's first person to summit twice.
History in all over Yorkton and colorful one at that. During WWII, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan had 2 flight schools in Yorkton, doing it's part for the war effort. Brothers Haryy and Sam Bronfman ran the Balmoral Hotel and an alcohol company as well during the early years and over the years of prohibition from 1915 to 1924. Right by the railroad track, the Balmoral hotel was a happening place. Although there is no credible written history about the possibility of tunnels and dealings with Al Capone, the runours abound to this day. However, as a former Yorkton resident, I can say that during my young working days in an old building in the downtown, I did see a small narrow tunnel in the dirt basement heading off in the direction of the Balmoral. Hhmmm.....
As for geocaching, they are all over the city and the area, hidden by local cachers and cachers who now reside in Saskatoon but still call Yorkton home.
