Geocache Description:

As Canadians, we take pride in our starry skies, northern lights, and large stretches of wilderness. Saskatchewan's vast open landscape holds above it some of the darkest skies in Canada, and as such some of the best places for astronomical observing. This series of caches is named after the stars and constellations you may see as you look up.

Alkaid (HIP 67301)

Alkaid is a blue main-sequence star in the constellation Ursa Major. At 104 light years away, it is the 39th brightest star in the Earth's sky, where it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 1.85. The iron abundance of Alkaid is -0.14 (72.4% of the Sun). It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 22.8 km/s relative to the Sun. Its projected Galactic orbit carries it between 22,400 and 24,200 light years from the center of the Galaxy. It will come closest to the Sun 803,000 years from now when it will brighten to magnitude 1.39 from a distance of 84 light years.
