Geocache Description:

Deutsch

English

On a hill eastwards of St. Pankraz the majestic caste keep of ruin Eschenlohe is visible from afar. Already in the 12th century a castle was built on this hill. It was capable of blocking the whole valley entrance and so kept control over the path to Ulten Valley on its feet. Back in those times the castle was called "Veste Ulten" and got its current name "Castle Eschenlohe" only after a change of owner and a rebuilding in the 13th century.
Over the centuries the castle changed its owner multiple times and decayed continously. Since the 15th century the earls of Trapp owned the building but sold it in 1990 whereupon the castle keep was alternated to a summer residence. Unfortunately it can't be visited but there are multiple information panels telling the castles story and also of the farm beneath it.
The cache is hidden in the neighbourhood of the keep and can be found without climbing or demolition of the ancient walls. Just keep in mind its size (small) and think.
