Geocache Description:

A solstice (from the latin sol (sun) + sistere (that stands still)) is an astronomical event that occurs twice a year, in June and December, as the sun reaches its highest or lowest excursion relative to the celestial equator. Its exact day and time difer from year to year. The day of the solstice is either the longest day of the year (in June) or the shortest day of the year (in December).

In the north hemisphere the summer solstice day is around the 21st of June and the winter solstice around the 21st of December. These dates set the beggining of the respective season for this given hemisphere. On the south hemisphere you get the opposite.

On the equator day’s lenght is always the same troughout the year, with 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of darkness. The only way to visualy determine the solstice is to observe the day when the sun reaches it’s lowest elevation at local midday. You can’t tell if it’s a summer or a winter solstice. In the artic and the antartic solstices set the only day throughout the year when day or night lasts for 24 straight hours .

Come and celebrate summer arrival with an evening barbecue!
