Yes, it's a gopher. Not a Richardson's Ground Squirrel. Unless you are not from Saskatchewan. As long as I can remember it has always been a gopher. Living in gopher holes, not in trees like squirrels do. And where else would you find a mascot for a proffessional football team that is a gopher. Glad to have you here Gainer!
