This series has been set to encourage you to walk along the Allt Mor Trail. This runs from near Loch Morlich in the village of Glenmore and follows near the Allt Mor ('Big Stream') burn through the forest and out into the mountains, finishing at the Cairngorm Mountain base station. It can be walked in either direction, ideally as a one way trail if you have a willing assistant to drop you off and pick you up, or catch the bus back to where you started. There is a gradual but constant incline, gaining around 250m in altitude over the 1 ¾ mile trail. Parking can be found in Glenmore or at the top car park (charged in some places, free in others). The track is well maintained but only suitable in parts for wheelchairs and bicycles, due to rocky steps, narrow boardwalks and drainage ditches.
As you walk along the trail, look out for red and roe deer in the forest, and mountain hare, red grouse and meadow pipits once you're up on the open mountain. Varied native plants include Scots pine, Silver birch, heather, blaeberry and juniper. If you're around in July and August you can pick some blaeberries as a snack for your walk. Dogs will love this trail, but be careful to keep them under close control, especially in the forest where deer can burst out from under your nose, and in Spring/early Summer when they may disturb ground nesting birds. Please be aware that this is a sensitive area and do your best to minimise your impact on the environment – the Forestry Commission have kindly allowed us to place these caches here, so let's help them keep the Cairngorms beautiful and safeguard the land for future generations.
