The cache is placed west of Craig-na-Shoke in a small plantation known locally as Molloy's Acre. The best approach is to follow the forestry track from the turnstile at the back of the car park area (Park 1). Underfoot it's all forestry tracks, with the exception of the cache site as it's on open mountain. A sheep's 'pad' heads in a north westerly direction from below the rock, this will take you to below Molly's Acre.
Wear walking boots and suitable clothing for the weather conditions. The cache is also accessible from the higher car park (Park 2), via the BT mast road and then on to open mountain.
This small segregated planting of conifers was planted single handedly by a then Forestry Service worker Joe Molloy. Joe, now deceased, was a former neighbour of mine and I have plenty of childhood memories of him as he also became my primary school's caretaker after he had retired from the Forestry Service.
Joe planted these specimens in the late 1960's or early '70's, I am not sure of the date. I am told that they were planted as part of a test to determine how growth and therefore timber tonnage was affected by local factors such as, altitude, prevailing wind, exposure, drainage etc. There are some mature trees in the test site and some not so.
The cache is of the bottle top variety containing a log only. BYOP. Don't forget to enjoy the views from up here.
This is a working forest, please obey all signs during harvesting.
