This Smugglers Cache is named after the notorious smugglers who traded illegally to avoid paying taxes. The lonely, shallow beaches of Romney Marsh were the ideal place to receive wine, spirits, lace, tea and tobacco before stashing them in the barns or even in churches. In return, wool was the main illegal export. Smuggling was rife on Romney Marsh and involved gangs of local men who could navigate the maze of ditches to quickly move the contraband off the marsh and hopefully evade the preventative officers.
