Household spirits of Scottish origin, described as being like a very small, brown, shaggy human. They do not have wings, in some instances they are said not to have a nose, but just two nostrils. Sometimes described with their fingers attached with a web, or joined completely together apart from the thumb. Families that know they have a brownie are proud and protective, as they bring good fortune to a household. Outside of the family, a brownie should be viewed with caution, as they are prone to mischief when annoyed. The brownie is the most industrious of the household spirits, ploughing, reaping, grinding grain, cleaning house and barns, churning butter ‘ almost any tedious job, they will gladly perform. In return, the brownie is entitled to a bowl of the best cream and fresh baked cake or bread, to be put within their reach. To offer a brownie any form of payment other than this, especially to take pity and give them new clothes, is an insult, and they will vanish immediately. If a brownie or their work is criticized, then not only will they undo everything that they have done, but also destroy a good deal more.
