In the most ancient layers of Greek mythology, Echidna is known as the ‘Mother of All Monsters’. Her lair is a rocky cave under Mount Edna. Echidna is usually considered to be the offspring of the union of Tartarus, one of the original forces from which the Cosmos was born, and Gaia, the Earth itself in goddess form. With her mate Typhon, a horrible monster with a hundred snake-like heads, and other partners, Echidna gave birth to many of the most fearful monsters in Greek Myth. Her children include Ladon, the hundred-headed dragon, Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades, the fearsome Nemean Lion, and hybrid creatures like the Chimera and the Sphinx.
