Iron Tree
Like most Gold Coasters I have driven past GZ, 100's if not 1,000's of times over the years and often thought one day I should drive down and have a closer look. Recently I was in the area, doing.... um... other things, so I finally got down for a look.
Back in 2007 the local authorities had to move the giant 300 plus kilogram Sea Eagle nest from the top of the power line tower to it's present location. The power was shut down in the area while a crane and birdnestologists hosted the delicate structure from it's precarious position. The purpose built pole was erected only 10m away so the territorial birds would continue to use it during their breeding season. Which starts in May, unfortunately I didn't see them on the day I was there.
The nest is 120m or so south west of GZ. The Iron Tree near the nest was a little to open to the neighbours for a geocache but GZ end of the park is a lot more secluded. Theres plenty of parking along Bosun Pde.
The cache is an eclipse tin.
Enjoy.
